Dmitri Makarov is a member of the council of the Moscow Helsinki Group, Russia's longest functioning human rights organization. Dmitri has initiated citizen-driven movements and grassroots human rights initiatives throughout his career, promoted citizen oversight over police, courts, and mass assemblies, and helped launch observation missions in reaction to mass human rights violations. Dmitri regularly leads human rights trainings and conducts workshops on public campaigning and international solidarity. He is a lawyer by trade and assisted in forming the first Russian human rights endowment, providing long-term support for human rights work from within Russia. He believes that the promise of human rights should inspire and drive people to action.
